Ingredients

  • 2 cups red berries (strawberries, raspberries)
  • 2 cups blueberries
  • 1 loaf vanilla cake or angel food cake, cubed
  • 2 cups whipped cream
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding or custard
  • Food coloring (optional), as needed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the vanilla cake according to package instructions or your favorite recipe and let it cool completely. Once cool, cut the cake into small cubes.
  2. In a trifle bowl or individual glasses, start layering by placing a layer of cake cubes at the bottom.
  3. Add a layer of vanilla pudding or custard on top of the cake cubes.
  4. Next, add a layer of red berries, followed by a generous layer of whipped cream.
  5. Continue the layering process, alternating with additional layers of cake, pudding, berries, and whipped cream until the bowl is filled. Always end with whipped cream on top.
  6. For the finishing touch, decorate the top with additional red and blue berries for that patriotic flair.
  7. Chill the trifle in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.

Notes

Assemble the trifle a few hours ahead to let the flavors meld. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within two days.
