  • Total Time: 13 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for tossing)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for tossing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oil in a deep fryer or a cast-iron pot to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon until combined.
  3. In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, egg, and melted butter, then combine with the dry ingredients, being careful not to overmix.
  4. Drop spoonful of dough into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
  6. Toss warm donut holes in cinnamon-sugar mixture while still hot.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, consider using a gluten-free flour blend. If you don’t have buttermilk, mix one tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar with one cup of milk and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
