What Kinds of Fruits and Vegetables Can you Use in Hawaiian Salad?

You can use any tropical fruits and vegetables in Hawaiian Salad, but pineapple is a predominant ingredient. The salad has a distinctly fruity flavor, mostly due to the chunks of ripe pineapple used in the recipe. The pineapple juices are also an integral part of the recipe. You will hardly ever find a recipe that uses pineapples so beautifully.

You can either make Hawaiian salad with tropical fruits or with tropical vegetables. However, the more elaborate ones use a combination of both. You can also use bean sprouts, mandarin oranges, and cherries. In addition, if you want to add some green to the bowl, you can go with lettuce or even baby spinach. However, one of the more popular options is using fresh cabbage leaves.

Cabbage has an inherently crunchy texture, and they do not become soggy or wilt easily. Shredded cabbage is an integral part of this recipe, and you should try to get the freshest cabbage possible. Purple cabbages add a dash of color as well. You can also add other leafy greens in the bowl if you want. Shredded cucumber will add an extra crunch and coolness to the dish as well.

What Kind of Dressing Would You Need for Hawaiian Salad?

Every salad has a dressing, and the Hawaiian salad is no different. And yet, making the dressing for this salad is one of the easiest. If you are really in a rush, simply tossing all the fruits and vegetables in the fruit juices is enough to make a fresh and appetizing salad. You can also add mayonnaise and cheese to the mix.

It all depends on how light or filling you want the salad to be and whether you prefer it with any other dish. For example, adding mayonnaise to the salad will make it fuller, richer, and heavier in texture and calories. On the other hand, if you want to keep it light and low on calories, you may add sour cream or yogurt instead. Or you could add apple cider vinegar, pepper, and lemon zest for a refreshing and tangy taste.

Can You Add Meat to Hawaiian Salad?

Although the Hawaiian Salad is vegetarian or fruity, you can make it rich in protein by adding meat to it. In that case, the salad will become more filling and will be very close to becoming an entire meal in itself. Cajun beef and chicken are the most popular options when it comes to adding meat to this salad.

You can sear the beef on the grill and season it generously with salt and pepper. Next, toss it in some butter and add a splash of wine to it. Then add the beef to the bowl and toss everything in.

On the other hand, you can add boiled chicken strips to the mix after seasoning it generously when you use chicken. You can also add chopped-up and leftover rotisserie chicken. Of course, you will also need some extra dressing to cover both the meat and the veggies, but it will be one of the tastiest salads you have had in your life.

Can You Make Hawaiian Salad in Advance?

Salads are best made fresh, and the Hawaiian salad is no exception. Making a salad well in advance will make the juices runny and cause greens to wilt. However, if you are in a rush, you can prep the salad in advance by chopping all the fruits and vegetables.

You can store them in the fridge so that they remain fresh and crunchy. Then, when it is time to assemble, you can simply fold everything together and prepare the salad. You can, of course, make the salad in advance if you want to serve a cold and fresh version of it.

For the cold and fresh version, mix all the fruits and vegetables in the bowl, and keep it in the fridge for 4 to 5 hours. Then, please take out the chilled bowl, add your dressing to it, toss and serve. If the salad is hard while it is still chilled, you will get to enjoy a wonderful and crunchy texture.

Can You Freeze Hawaiian Salad?

Freezing the completely prepared Hawaiian salad is not such a good idea. Because when you freeze the salad, you would also need to thaw it before you have it a few weeks later. And much of the crunch and texture of the salad will be lost during the thawing.

However, you can freeze some elements of the salad in freeze-proof boxes. For example, the chunks of fruit will freeze very well. In addition, you might also freeze some of the vegetables like shredded carrots or tomatoes. When it is time to assemble the salad, be sure to take out all the ingredients and thaw the ones you had stored in the freezer. Then, let the frozen water drip away and put everything in a colander so that they become dry. Then, you can go on to assemble the salad as desired.

Once you have stored all the ingredients in separate freezer boxes, you can wrap them again in plastic wraps for an extra layer of protection. This way, the fruits and ingredients can stay fresh for up to 2 to 3 weeks. However, unlike cooked food, it is inadvisable to store them for more than three weeks since the ingredients are mostly raw.
