  • Total Time: 180 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk, warm water, and active dry yeast; let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix together flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and citrus zests.
  3. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf or braid. Place it in a greased baking pan.
  7. Let the dough rise again for about 30 minutes.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Whisk together powdered sugar, lemon juice, and orange juice until smooth for the glaze. Drizzle over the cooled bread before serving.

Notes

Ensure your yeast is fresh for optimal rise. For a dairy-free version, use almond milk instead of regular milk.
